Dr. Michael Retsky (PhD in Physics from University of Chicago) made a career change to cancer research thirty years ago. He is on staff at Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health and Angiogenesis Foundation, both in Boston. He is also on faculty at University College London. Retsky is Editor of a Nature/Springer book on breast cancer to be published in 2017 and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Bioequivalence and Bioavailability. He is a founder and on the Board of Directors of the Colon Cancer Alliance and has published more than 60 papers in physics and cancer.
He was diagnosed with stage IIIc colon cancer in 1994. Based on his prior research on tumor growth and therapy he decided against using conventional maximum tolerated chemotherapy. Instead he used a low dose, long term therapy administered daily with a portable infusion pump and the usual colon cancer drug 5-fluorouracil. The therapy was non-toxic and apparently worked well since he did not relapse and it is now well beyond the period of risk of relapse..

This was followed by pathology training at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast and Membership of the Royal College of Pathologists in 1978. He then completed a Dermatopathology Fellowship at St John’s Hospital for Diseases of the Skin in London. He was appointed to the Faculty of St Thomas’ Hospital Medical School in London in 1979 and subsequently to the Faculty of St John’s Hospital for Diseases of the Skin in 1992. In 1989 he was made Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists and in 1992 was awarded his Doctorate in Medicine by Queen’s University of Belfast.

Legend of Dermatopathology– Dr. Phillip McKee will present his Keynote talk at the 8th Emirates Pathology & Digital Pathology Utilitarian Conference (EPUCG2021).
Phillip McKee, MB, Bch, BAO, MD, FRCPath, qualified in medicine 1972 at Queen’s University Belfast, Northern Ireland. This was followed by pathology training at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast and Membership of the Royal College of Pathologists in 1978. He then completed a Dermatopathology Fellowship at St John’s Hospital for Diseases of the Skin in London. He was appointed to the Faculty of St Thomas’ Hospital Medical School in London in 1979 and subsequently to the Faculty of St John’s Hospital for Diseases of the Skin in 1992. In 1989 he was made Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists and in 1992 was awarded his Doctorate in Medicine by Queen’s University of Belfast.
Dr. McKee was recruited to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston as Director of Dermatopathology and Associate Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School. While there he received NIH funding for his involvement in two major research studies.

Dr. Anil Parwani is a Professor of Pathology at The Ohio State University. He serves as the Vice-Chair and Director of Anatomical Pathology. Dr. Parwani is also the Director of Pathology Informatics and Director of the Digital Pathology Shared Resource at The James Cancer Hospital. His research is focused on diagnostic and prognostic markers in bladder and prostate cancer, and molecular classification of renal cell carcinoma.
Dr. Parwani has expertise in the area of surgical pathology, viral immunology, and pathology informatics including designing quality assurance tools, biobanking informatics, clinical and research data integration, applications of whole slide imaging, digital imaging, telepathology, image analysis, and lab automation.

She is also a professor and the director of the Cytopathology Fellowship at the University of South Florida (USF) Morsani College of Medicine.

Dr. Michael Retsky received his PhD in experimental physics from University of Chicago in 1974. While working at Hewlett-Packard in Colorado Springs in 1982, a friend started an informal cancer research project since his wife was being treated for cancer. Retsky gradually became more interested in cancer research than in physics research. Over the next years, he gradually made a career change into cancer research.
