The study of nervous system tissue diseases, or neuropathology, typically takes the form of whole-body autopsy or tiny surgical biopsies. Although they frequently rely on neuropathology for a diagnosis, neuropathologists frequently operate in a department of anatomic pathology. They also collaborate closely with the clinical fields of neurology and neurosurgery. Because brain disease or injury can be linked to a cause of death, neuropathology and forensic pathology are related fields of study. It is important to distinguish between neuropathology and neuropathy, which are problems of the nerves (often in the peripheral nervous system) as opposed to the tissues. Neuropathology is a topic of study that combines the branches of the specialisations of the nervous system and tissues.

The majority of a neuropathologist’s work involves analysing postmortem or biopsy brain and spinal cord tissue to help with illness diagnosis. [1] Additionally, tissues can be seen in the eyes, muscles, organ surface, and malignancies. The request for a biopsy typically follows the discovery of a mass by radiologic imaging, which was in turn prompted by the patient’s presenting signs and symptoms. CT scans are also utilised to identify patient problems. Regarding autopsies, the neuropathologist’s main responsibility is to support post-mortem dementia and other disorders that impact the central nervous system diagnosis. In the lab, tissue samples are examined for forensic and diagnostic purposes.

Depending on the circumstance, neuropathologists may work in academic institutions, government agencies, or hospital labs and clinics. They frequently solely interact behind the scenes with medical staff or other administrators rather than patients. They do study using data provided to them by other neurologists and/or medical professionals. For forensic studies, neuropathologists may also conduct research in coroner’s or morgue offices. Finding the underlying medical condition and developing a timeline for treating the patient’s tissue are the ultimate objectives of neuropathologists.

The Role of the Neuropathologist

Neuropathologists have substantial training in analysing nervous system tissues.

To evaluate if the aberrant tissue is a tumour or whether it displays indications of an illness that mimics a tumour, they review radiologic investigations alongside the tissue samples.

Moreover, neuropathologists examine:

Obtaining nerve tissue samples from different parts of the body will help doctors establish whether weakness and pain are being caused by a neurological disease.

samples of brain tissue to look for signs of Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS)

Alzheimer’s condition

Alzheimer’s disease

Parkinson’s condition

In order to better comprehend these disorders, neuropathologists frequently support neurological research projects that involve tissue samples.
